Instituted on 25 April 1834 by William VIII. In silver gilt, consisting of blue enameled Maltese cross with ball finials and a gilt border, with the crowned monogram W for Wilhelm in each quadrant, hand painted on all but the lower cross arms are peacock feathers in naturalistic representation, on the lower arm of the cross is the helmet of the Braunschweig coat of arms, centre obverse shows a
