Now, over four decades later, the band has never stopped making music and have always been led by guitarist singer Naoko Yamano. In the early 1990s, they began to gain some recognition outside of Japan thanks in part to the legendary band Nirvana and their singer Kurt Cobain. Shonen Knife opened for Nirvana on a European tour and their album Burning Farm was on his all time favorites list.
